Packaging 101: The Secret World of Chipboard
(for the Promo Product Industry)
Chipboard consists of pressed fibers made out of recycled paper, and is used mainly in packaging and for journal covers and notepad backings. It is generally available in grey, natural or black, and in different thicknesses. It’s the least expensive material you can use, with grey being the least expensive. In general, because of its recycled content, the color and texture of chipboard varies, especially if you are working with natural chipboard. Whereas black chip remains the same color with slight variances in texture, natural board ranges from a greyish to light brown.
Thicknesses: We stock chipboard in 18 pt, 22 pt, 40 pt, 60 pt, 80 pt and 100 pt. Depending on what you’re trying to accomplish, here is a general guideline:
Packaging
Small boxes- 18 – 40 pt. If your client needs to package notecards, coasters, a mug, pencils, or something small, then 18 or 40 pt is sufficient. 18 pt may be a little flimsy- think of two thin business cards stuck together. It just depends on the shape of your product- I had this lovely eco lunchpail done in a 22pt and it was just the right weight.
Velcro
Snap
String Tie ( looks great with recycled theme products)
Journals
- Plain board: You can use the board alone, and foil stamp and/or silkscreen it. This is clean and ideal for someone looking for an eco-friendly book, plus we can turn it around very quickly.

San Diego is Awesome!
Folks, the ASI Show was awesome this week. The Traffic Booth was not exactly overrun with people, but we had a good, steady stream of distributors in and out of the booth. Not bad for the first ASI show in San Diego. Plus, we made a new friend today-David of Warm Whiskers, a supplier of lush aromatherapy pillows and really cool pet products. He was the tallest person I've ever met- at 6'8". But the coolest tall person I've ever met as well.
The weather was perfect in sunny San Diego- walking to dinner last night in downtown, we encountered cruise ship passengers, SP, (Steve's term for 'Show People') and lots of other good looking people. I can't believe how clean the streets are!
The most exciting thing about Friday (besides our dinner at Lou and Marty's)was the fact that we got to see Tony Robbins speak today. He's really good- you'd think that all the hype was about nothing, but dude is talented. For some reason, they put out half a roomful of chairs, when the room was packed before he even got on stage. ( You ever notice how motivational speakers always break into a small run when they come on? )
I caught Promo the ASI Mascot grooving to some music in the hallway. He had to take a picture with us, and another one because Steve thought his smile was crooked. ( it probably is)
Check out some pictures- you may see something that you were asking about but forgot to get an item#. As usual, our MobiGrip and Light Up journals were present!
Be sure to check our blog regularly- we will be doing a segment on artwork and imprinting methods ( silkscreening, foil stamping and embossing.) Find out what all that jargon from our art department really means, and all the possible ways to imprint leather, recycled chipboard, aluminum, wood, and fabric!
